The goal of Master Chess is to checkmate the opponent's king, meaning placing the opponent's king in a position where it cannot move without being threatened. When the king is checkmated and has no safe moves, you win the game.
The chessboard and pieces
- The chessboard has 8x8 squares, alternating light and dark colors.
- Each player has 16 pieces, including: 1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, 2 Rooks, 8 Pawns.
Each piece moves according to its own rules:
- King: 1 square in any direction.
- Queen: Moves straight or diagonally any number of squares.
- Rook: Moves straight along rows or columns.
- Bishop: Moves diagonally any number of squares.
- Knight: Moves in an L-shape 2 squares in one direction, then 1 square at a right angle.
- Pawn: Moves 1 square forward can move 2 squares on its first move, captures diagonally 1 square.
Special rules
- Castling: The King and Rook, if neither has moved, can move together to protect the king. En Passant: If your opponent's pawn moves two squares from its starting rank and lands next to your pawn, you can capture it as if it had only moved one square.
- Pawn Promotion: When a pawn reaches the last rank, it can be promoted to a Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight.
Order of moves
- White moves first, and the two players take turns moving one piece.
- You are not allowed to move a piece that would put your own king in check.
Ending the game
- Checkmate: When the king is threatened and there are no safe moves left, win.
- Draw: When there are not enough pieces to checkmate, or the position repeats three times, or 50 consecutive moves have been made without a capture or pawn move.
